I've spent 10+ years bouncing between visual and UI design, front-end development, and branding and identity work. Some people pick a lane. I picked all of them and never looked back. (My mom calls it "range." My old bosses called it "wearing a lot of hats.")
My clients have ranged from one-person companies to national brands, and I've learned the same lesson from both: everyone wants it to look great, work perfectly, and be done by Friday.
I've seen what I do called "Design Engineer." I guess I have been doing it since before the title was formalized, which means I spent years explaining what I do to people at parties. It still confuses people, so I just say I am in charge of "colors and shapes." Now there are job postings for it. I like to think I was just early.
